In this extract from See Red Women's Workshop, take a look at the group's calendar for the year 1977.

See Red produced calendars for the years 1976, 1977, 1978, 1980 and 1984.

The calendar format was a very useful way of trying out designs to see if they worked. The women in the group were brimming with a variety of ideas that we wanted to explore: it also gave us a chance to gauge the reaction to these themes. As the calendar pages were on walls for a month or two at a time, it was also a chance to use images and text that needed a longer look and had more detail to absorb. The calendars were extremely popular and we produced hundreds of copies, selling out every year.

In the 1977 calendar, April features the lyrics ‘I’ve done what they told me I’ve done what they said. Worked at my job at home and in bed. But it’s not too late for my life to be fine now I know what’s been messing me up all the time.’

May shows Sojourner Truth, with the quote: ‘I think that twixt the black folk of the south and the women of the north all talkin about rights that the white men gonna give, gonna be in a pretty fix soon. The man over there says women need to be helped into carriages and lifted over ditches and have the best places everywhere. Nobody ever helped me into carriages or over mud puddles, or give me any best place — and ain’t I a woman? The little man in the back there said that women can’t have as much rights as men ’cos Christ weren’t a woman. Where did your Christ come from? From God and a woman. Man didn’t have nothing to do with him.’

December shows Joseph, saying ‘Three more for supper, Mary’.
